Welcome to Winter Group Inc PDF Print E-mail

The Winter Group is a friendly cross-country ski club involved in a number of activities. We network with each other to arrange day ski tours and snow camping trips.

We also schedule  pub nights, camping trips and barbecues throughout the year to keep in touch. The club enjoys lots of good company and fun.

We have pub nights on the last Tuesday of each month (except December) from 6.30 p.m. onwards at various watering holes. This is an opportunity to get together, relax and have a meal and a drink. It's also a good time to plan trips.

Thursday 18th August 2011. Coronet Peak Hotel near Queenstown was well placed to head out to the Snow Farm. The road was very windy along part of the route and had a number of chain-fitting bays. We drove through Cardrona village, rather quaint and old world. The road up to Snow Farm was very hairy and windy, gravel and icy but the day was bright and sunny. A polar blast had dumped a lot of snow and the afternoon skiing was awesome.

Snow gums on one of the many clearings on the Baw Baw Plateau

Snow gums on one of the many clearings on the Baw Baw Plateau

Mount St Gwinear is located on the Baw Baw Plateau in Gippsland, approximately 2.5 hours drive from Melbourne. Mount St Gwinear is part of the Baw Baw Plateau in Gippsland, which undulates between 1250m and 1560m.

The plateau receives high rainfall and is the only place in Victoria I know of where Myrtle Beech rainforest merges into sub-alpine vegetation. To cover snow clearing costs, Parks Victoria charge a $10.50 entry fee (this fee may be removed as of July 2010), with no trail fees.

There is a nice country pub 30 minutes from St Gwinear, in Erica, for a drink or meal at the end of the day. This is probably my favourite day trip destination from Melbourne.

President’s Annual Report - May 2011 PDF Print E-mail

2010 was a reasonable snow season.

Membership numbers continued to decline to the extent that no official Winter Group ski activities occurred. The decline in numbers was caused by health issues among existing members and our inability to attract new members.

The Howmans Gap camp was booked, but so few members wanted to attend that the camp was cancelled. Luckily, our deposit was refunded.

Pub nights continued to be popular.

The Committee continued to discuss how to manage our declining numbers, lack of members willing to organize and run activities, and increasing public liability insurance costs. Some of our thoughts about these issues will be discussed during the AGM.

Unlike 2008, 2009 wasn’t a bumper snow season. But there was good skiing to be had for those who got their timing right, or were prepared to travel.

I was appointed by the Committee to the vacant position of President in June 2009. It has been a privilege to assist the Club in that way.

Our major activity was the Howmans Gap Camp in August which seemed to be enjoyed by all participants despite a mixed bag of weather. Some other activities did not go ahead because of lack of snow (primarily at Lake Mountain). This was probably more disappointing for the people of Marysville and Lake Mountain because they were looking for a good season to help recover from Black Saturday.
